4 Different Types Of Flat Screen Wall Mounts

Thursday, September 24th, 2009

Shopping for the right flat screen wall mounts for your particular needs can get a little confusing if you don’t know what you are really looking for. You need to determine which type of flat panel tv mount will work best for the room that you plan on putting your LCD or plasma TV in. You will be considering things such as room dimensions and overall space. Different types of wall mounts allow you to angle your TV to different positions, so your room dimensions and desired viewing areas will determine the type of mount you choose. Some of the common types include cantilever, tilt & swivel, tilting and flat wall mounts. We will discuss the uses for each type.

1) Cantilever mounts are very flexible and allow you to angle your TV to almost any position. They use an articulating arm that your TV is mounted on. This arm allows you to swing your television away form the wall and position it from left to right. These flat screen TV wall mounts can also tilt up and down and pivot left and right. This makes cantilever wall mounts the most flexible of all styles. This type of mount would enable you to watch your plasma TV in either of two adjacent rooms, if desired. The only drawbacks are that your TV will not be sitting snug against the wall. This type of wall mount is also better suited for smaller screen sizes.

2) Tilt & swivel mounts provide all of the funtions of cantilevers, except that they are not mounted on an arm that swings out from the wall. They are still fairly flexible as far as function goes, as they can still pivot the screen left and right, as well as tilt up and down. This will give you the ability to watch your flat panel in many different seating positions in your viewing room. Again, tilt & swivel mounts require more space between the wall and the TV. The added flexibilty may be worth it though.

3) Tilting mounts only allow you to tilt your screen up and down and won’t pivot left and right at all. Changing the viewing angle up and down may be all that you require for your particular viewing room. It allows for good angles to watch TV from a seated position on a couch, or lying down on the floor. Sometimes a slight up or down adjustment is all that is necessary to remove the glare from any light coming into the room. These flat screen wall mounts sit fairly close to the wall, but do require a bit of room to allow for the tilting movement. Most tilting mounts will give you around 15 degrees of adjustment.

4) Flat mounts don’t have the flexibility of the other wall mounts, but they do have their advantages. For one, they are very secure if mounted properly. You can mount larger screen sizes as flat mounts are very stable. There are some environments that don’t require changing the viewing angle of the TV screen at all. Permanent installations in bars or clubs that have multiple screens would be an example. Flat TV mounts can come with a very thin profile so that you can mount your TV snug against the wall. It’s an attractive option as it showcases your flat panel screen much like a picture mounted in a frame. It’s also great if space is limited in your particular room.

So give a bit of thought to how you want to position your flat screen TV in your viewing area. Decide if you need to be able to adjust it to various viewing angles, or if a stationary position is best. Make sure to browse around online for the various styles and prices of wall mounts available. This makes it easy to shop and compare in the comfort of your own home. Happy viewing!
